Good evening!

Well we are two days away from our holiday break! The students and staff are excited about another opportunity to spend time with family and to relax.  Please be encouraged to take an extra moment to just love on your family members. Also take a little time to reach out to those that have suffered losses and are missing those that have helped to make this time special. Our school community has definitely had our share of challenges this year but thanks to your generous hearts, we have made it! I want to take a moment to simply say THANK YOU for taking the extra time to come out to school activities, participating in fundraisers, and supporting our scholars and teachers. 

The dance was a huge success and the students had a blast. Let the truth be told, the teachers had a great time too! Thank you to all that donated food or funds. Last week was just filled with activities and events throughout the school. A huge shout out to Mr. Lawrence, Mrs. Floyd, and Mrs. Camp. Our students were nothing short or phenomenal.

Device Information

Thank you for your feedback regarding the restructuring of the 1:1 initiative at Hilsman Middle School. The conversations held on FaceBook, the emails, and the face to face discussions with parents implicated that there were an overwhelming number of parents and teachers that supported our decision to decrease the usage of computers. There are several parents who raised some great concerns and please know that we are working to communicate answers to you. Our GAVS students will continue to receive instruction via computer. Due to the make up of the class, they may be allowed to continue to use their devices both at home and at school. We are currently working to ensure that we do not interfere with the progress that they are making in the program. Please note that students will continue to have access to technology during instructional time. The only major change is that students will no longer bring devices home. Data used to help make this decision showed that students are not using the computers for instructional purposes. Instead more than 60% of their usage is on social media or google chatting. Discipline data was not our only indicator for wanting to make this shift. 

Our primary focus is to help improve student achievement. Instructional time has been negatively impacted due to the inappropriate usage of technology. Teaching and learning will only be strengthened by using other instructional strategies to deliver instruction to our students. I agree that students will find access using other devices. This is why we will continue to reinforce the No Flex Zone rule at Hilsman. This rule prohibits students from using their cell phones during school hours. I will send a reminder of the rule before we return to school in January. 

In an effort to not burden parents or teachers with purchasing school supplies, we are hosting a school supply drive. I will also allocate funds to purchase more classroom supplies. A list of supplies is attached in a letter from Mr. Forker. If you have any further questions or concerns, please see Mr. Forker or Ms. Tolbert.

The Panther Prowl 5K is almost here!! We are still looking for sponsors and runners. Family Science Night will be on Thursday, January 18 from 5:00-7:00 pm.

Sock Hop Information

7th Grade ELA "Soc Hop" Dance on Tuesday, 12/19/17 during 6th and 7th periods. Parents are welcomed to attend and donate food items such as chips, cookies, cupcakes, and drinks.

Hilsman had an amazing showing in the school science fair. The top thirty scoring projects will go on to the CCSD Science Fair in early January.

Happy Sunday evening!

Burrr it is COLD outside. Please make sure that your children are properly dressed this week for the weather. This is a busy week. Make sure you pay close attention to the Week at a Glance to stay abreast of the activities. 

This is also DRESS DOWN WEEK! Students who did not receive a discipline referral last week earned the privilege of dressing down. A discipline referral is one that has been processed by an administrator and typically results in a student being suspended or placed in ISS. A phone call would have been made to a parent/guardian and a referral form would have been issued to the student. If you have any questions or think that you child may have received a referral, contact Ms. Tolbert or Mr. Forker. I respectfully ask that you remind your child about the dress code. NO SLIDES or jeans with rips, tears, or holes. Joggers and Sweats are permissible. Monday and Tuesday of next week, students will be in uniform.

As we are nearing the end of this term, please access Parent Portal to review your child's progress. We want all of our students to pass their classes but it takes a village to ensure that they are meeting the expectations. If you have questions regarding grades or assignments, please contact your child's teacher(s).

1:1 Device Talk

Parents,

Mr. Forker and I are interested in your feedback regarding the use of student computers. In an effort to refocus our attention on the academic achievement of our students, Mr. Forker is working on an initiative to provide technology to our students in a different way   We are looking at the possibility of not having students bring devices home. Technology will continue to be to incorporated into student learning as teachers will be provided with laptop carts for students to access during their instructional time. Data has indicated that our students are spending more time engaging in social activities then they are on their academics while on the devices. Additionally, our discipline infractions has been on a rise as a result of students interactions on social media outside of school. We want to hear your voices too! Please tell us what your thoughts are regarding this initiative!

COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS. While the holidays can be an exciting time for many students, it can also be a difficult time for others. We hope to make it less stressful by providing you with some of the available resources in the Athens area. 
 Community Connection of Northeast Georgia: Dial 2-1-1 to be linked to various resources in Athens (food, housing, etc.). 
 Georgia Crisis & Access Line: Dial 1-800-715-4225 to gain access to mental health and crisis services.

Please contact one of the school counselors or the school social worker if you need more assistance getting connected to services. We will be offering several small counseling groups starting in January, including a grief group. Please contact us if you are interested. We look forward to seeing you again in January 2018! 

7th Grade News


The seventh grade is excited to announce an upcoming event celebrating one of our most popular units in ELA, The Outsiders. To culminate our study, we are having a “sock hop,” or dance, fifties-style. Students are allowed to dress up as a “Soc” or a “Greaser,” or simply wear their school uniform. The dance will be held on Tuesday, December 19th, during 6th and 7th periods.  No permission slip is required, but we do ask that you contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you do NOT want them to participate. An alternate location will be provided.
To make the occasion more festive for our children, we are asking that parents provide snacks or drinks.  Ms. Rucker’s students bring:  cookies or cupcakes, Bevis’s students bring:  bottled water or bottled sports drinks, Mr. Heu’s students:  bring in individually bagged servings of chips, Ms. Jones’s students bring:  in napkins--all are welcome and appreciated. Please don’t feel pressured; contribute as you can.

Update on SS Tutoring for 6th Graders

Social Studies tutoring will move to Mondays unless there becomes a conflict with intramural sports.

Looking Ahead in AgriScience

Monday Dec 18- SAE projects 3 hours and 3 pictures due on Google Classroom. This is the final SAE grade and counts as a test. Please check with your student if they are currently enrolled in an Ag class- it is required of all students!

Good evening Panther Nation!

It is indeed a Saturday in Athens! We are gearing up for another week of hard work at Hilsman. We are all working to end the year successfully. Parents, we ask that you please encourage your child to complete all assignments and follow the PAWS Expectations. 21st Century, PSP, and grade level tutoring opportunities are being offered to help students. Please take advantage of these services.

We have extended an incentive to all students. For every day a student does not receive a discipline referral, they will earn a free dress down day the week of December 10th. This means that students could potentially earn an entire week of dress down the week before the winter break if they meet all of the behavior expectations! They can do it! If a student receives a discipline referral, they will lose a day. However, they will have the opportunity to have the other days available! Help us to encourage our scholars. 

Thank you for responding to the idea regarding the outing at the theater to view the movie Wonder. Again, this is a great movie that shared many great messages that would be beneficial to our students. I am looking to schedule the event for Tuesday, December 19th after 5:00 but hopefully before 6:30. I wanted to give you a little time to plan to attend our first family outing. I am truly looking forward to this event.

The Hilsman Middle School Chorus will be performing December 12th at Cedar Shoals High School Auditorium for a Winter Holiday Musical Event. The program will begin at 6:30 pm. (Parents-Parents please bring students to CSHS no later than 6:00 pm. The students attire for the program is either Gold chorus shirt, black slacks, and black shoes or Black chorus shirt, black slacks, and black shoes).

Science Fair projects are in full swing. Students may do their backboards virtually or on their own backboards, for which they are to supply the materials.  The school science fair will take place December 11th. Any scientists willing to volunteer as judges can contact Mrs. Maxey.

In the IB world, students have worked hard on MYP projects. They have begun to think like the experts. Some of these projects are displayed on the IB board in the front hallway. 

Students are working on their Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing/Art Competition submissions due in January.

IB: The first IB report cards will be going home with the second nine weeks report card. The rubrics and assessment specifics are on the curriculum portal. The link is below. Feel free to contact Mrs. Maxey with any further questions.

Meals in the Middle

Our next Meals in the Middle fundraiser, featuring a meal prepared collaboratively by all four CCSD middle schools, will be held on Tuesday, December 5th at 6:30 pm at the Athens Community career academy. Tickets are $25 with all proceeds going to benefit the work of the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens. Read more about the work of IHN at http://www.ihnathens.org/

GAVS Parents

The GAVS Algebra class will be taking their first semester final exam on Wednesday, December 6, during 1st and 2nd periods. This exam has a 90 minute time frame, and students will test in the Media Center. Please make sure your child is present and on time for school.

Morning Hilsman Pride,

We are in the midst of a much needed break! I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving and enjoyed your families. I am definitely enjoying the opportunity to get a few extra hours of sleep. However I must admit, I miss the students! As we all took an extra moment to give thanks, allow me to give thanks to all of you. It is with pleasure that I serve the students, parents, and staff of Hilsman Middle School. I do not take it lightly and is grateful for the work that is performed in and out of our building. Thank you for being an awesome group of parents that support our school community. You are an intricate part of our success!
