Week of September 30, 2018

Motivation for the Week: https://youtu.be/-sUKoKQlEC4

Good Sunday Panther Nation!

Thank you to all of the parents and community members that came out to our school sponsored family events held the last two weeks. There was a lot of fun had and some great information shared with our Panther Nation. A huge shout out to Ms. Barnett and her team for organizing the events!

As we continue moving forward this year, I want to challenge our community to get involved in our school. The community influence is just as important as the work that is being done in the classrooms. Your presence, your example, and your coaching can help make the difference in the life of a child!

We are continuing to impress the importance of being college and career ready upon all of our students. As a staff we pledge to become more consistent with our practices while holding our students accountable for owning their learning. Please continue to perform binder checks, review grades in Parent Portal, and be in the know about how your child is progressing academically and behaviorally. It takes a village! Our village is growing stronger everyday!

In partnership with you,

Principal Tolbert

Announcements

Uniforms

We have noticed an increase in the number of students arriving to school out of uniform. The expectations have been shared and all students are aware of what is acceptable to wear to school. To avoid consequences, I  am asking that you take an extra moment to remind your child of the expectations. We have provided students with the correct attire however at this time, we are out of stock. If you would like to donate uniforms to the school, please contact Ms. Barnett in the front office at 706-548-7281.

Tardies/Absences

School begins promptly at 8:25. Our overall attendance average is hovering in the mid 90's. It is our goal to be 98% or above! We want all of our students to be present at school and on time. In the words of Mr. Dwight Manzy, when you miss school, you miss out! If your child must be absent from school, please send in an excuse ASAP.

Happy Friday Panther Nation!

Thank you to all of the parents that came out to join us for the Grade Levels' Parent Night! Although we wish we could have had a larger turn out, we appreciate those of you that came out to hear about the great things happening at HMS. If you missed the presentations, they were linked on FB by the grade level teachers.

We had a fun filled week at Hilsman! Students were observed working hard while teachers were delivering some great instruction! Students also celebrated with Cedar Shoals this week as they prepared for their homecoming today. They did an awesome job!

Please continue to encourage your scholars to be respectful and kind. The number of fights have decreased the last two weeks of school. Transitions are smoother and students are beginning to take ownership of their behavior and learning. We are teaching to reach every student at Hilsman.

Progress reports were sent home Thursday. Please take time to review your child's grades. If your child is failing a course please get them signed up for PSP ASAP! If teachers have not already contacted you, they will be in touch with you next week. We are working to put remediation plans in place to ensure that ALL students are meeting standards and passing their courses. Remember it takes a VILLAGE! Tomorrow is Saturday in Athens! Enjoy your weekend and we will welcome everyone back on Monday!

Thanks,
Principal Tolbert

Week of 9/9/2018

Quote of the Week:

bbking“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”

—B.B. King

Happy Sunday! Thank you for your continued support of the Panther Nation! Our counselors did a great job this week of providing classroom guidance counseling to all of our students. Students were given resources and strategies to use to help them resolve conflicts without fighting. Please continue to talk to your children about being kind and respectful. More importantly, remind them that fighting is NOT the way to solve problems. We have included some resources for parents below to help guide these conversations with your scholar.

I am sure that many of you pass our old school site daily on your way to Hilsman 2.0! It is coming along well. We are on schedule to return to our new home next year. I have had an opportunity to visit the site and watched them pore the foundation for the 6th grade hall! It was so exciting. It is my hope to have pictures of the new Hilsman Middle School posted in the halls before the end of this month!

Although we are super excited about our return to the new building, we want to continue making our  current school beautiful. We could use some volunteers to help us make our courtyard colorful and a place that our students could  better enjoy lunch. Plants, picnic tables, and maybe even a few chairs would be great! Please consider helping us out!  We also welcome you to come decorate a bulletin board, read to a student, supervise the cafeteria, or help in the front office! HMS wants YOU to get INVOLVED in our school! Contact Ms. Barnett at 706-548-7281 for more information about ways to volunteer at Hilsman.

As we continue to focus on being better every day, I want to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to our school community. YOU all rock! Please continue to work with us to educate our youth not just at school but in our communities too! It takes a village and our village is getting stronger and better every day!

Announcements

We are hosting Grade Level Family Nights at HMS! Please come out to meet your child's teacher! This is an opportunity for parents to gain a better understanding of the curriculum and learning expectations for our students. It is also an opportunity for you to learn more about how Title 1 funds are used at Hilsman.

Due to limited space and parking we are hosting each grade level on a different day. The event will begin promptly at 6:00 pm and end at 7:30 pm. Parents will assemble in the cafeteria for a Title 1 Presentation after which they will follow their child's schedule.

Uniform Rule Update:

Although the CCSD Student Code of Conduct does not define the dress code for schools, it does inform parents to defer to the school's dress code rule. I have corrected our Dress Code rule in an effort to provide more clarity related to the articles of clothing that are not permissible at HMS. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at tolbertu@clarke.k12.ga.us.

Below you will find the dress code specific to HMS.
