Week of 12/10/2017

Quote of the Week: Image result for quotes

Happy Sunday evening!

Burrr it is COLD outside. Please make sure that your children are properly dressed this week for the weather. This is a busy week. Make sure you pay close attention to the Week at a Glance to stay abreast of the activities.

This is also DRESS DOWN WEEK! Students who did not receive a discipline referral last week earned the privilege of dressing down. A discipline referral is one that has been processed by an administrator and typically results in a student being suspended or placed in ISS. A phone call would have been made to a parent/guardian and a referral form would have been issued to the student. If you have any questions or think that you child may have received a referral, contact Ms. Tolbert or Mr. Forker. I respectfully ask that you remind your child about the dress code. NO SLIDES or jeans with rips, tears, or holes. Joggers and Sweats are permissible. Monday and Tuesday of next week, students will be in uniform.

As we are nearing the end of this term, please access Parent Portal to review your child's progress. We want all of our students to pass their classes but it takes a village to ensure that they are meeting the expectations. If you have questions regarding grades or assignments, please contact your child's teacher(s).

As always, thank you for your continued support of Hilsman. See you all in the morning!

Principal Tolbert

Announcements

1:1 Device Talk

Parents,

Mr. Forker and I are interested in your feedback regarding the use of student computers. In an effort to refocus our attention on the academic achievement of our students, Mr. Forker is working on an initiative to provide technology to our students in a different way   We are looking at the possibility of not having students bring devices home. Technology will continue to be to incorporated into student learning as teachers will be provided with laptop carts for students to access during their instructional time. Data has indicated that our students are spending more time engaging in social activities then they are on their academics while on the devices. Additionally, our discipline infractions has been on a rise as a result of students interactions on social media outside of school. We want to hear your voices too! Please tell us what your thoughts are regarding this initiative!

7th Grade News

The seventh grade is excited to announce an upcoming event celebrating one of our most popular units in ELA, The Outsiders. To culminate our study, we are having a “sock hop,” or dance, fifties-style. Students are allowed to dress up as a “Soc” or a “Greaser,” or simply wear their school uniform. The dance will be held on Tuesday, December 19th, during 6th and 7th periods.  No permission slip is required, but we do ask that you contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you do NOT want them to participate. An alternate location will be provided.
To make the occasion more festive for our children, we are asking that parents provide snacks or drinks.  Ms. Rucker’s students bring:  cookies or cupcakes, Bevis’s students bring:  bottled water or bottled sports drinks, Mr. Heu’s students:  bring in individually bagged servings of chips, Ms. Jones’s students bring:  in napkins--all are welcome and appreciated. Please don’t feel pressured; contribute as you can.
