Greetings Panther Nation!

The BIG moment has come for us to welcome all of our students back to school. I am elated to serve as the principal of Hilsman Middle School and work alongside our school community to propel the students of Hilsman towards excellence. Our work will be focused on ensuring that every student who walks through the doors of our school be provided with a quality, equitable, and rigorous education. Our school motto this year is "It takes a village". It takes a village to raise our children to be college/career ready so they are better able to be productive citizens. We will work together as a village to make our students BETTER EVERYDAY!

Thank you to all of the families that came out Saturday to Hilfest. It was great to greet many of you as you became better acquainted with our new setting, Hilsman 2.0. Thank you to our custodians, teachers, and members of Plant Services for working to help make it feel like home! I would also like to thank the students and parents who volunteered throughout the week. We are off to a great start to the 2018-2019 school year.

As you prepare to bring your scholar to school Tuesday, please read the information below carefully. If you have any questions, please call the school at 706-548-7281. Again, I look forward to working with you this year! See you Monday.

Announcements

School Hours

Our school hours are from 8:25-3:45. Students will report to homeroom at 8:00 and will be dismissed to their first class at 8:23. It is important that you ensure your child is present and in class at 8:25. After 8:25 students are tardy and will sign in at the front office before reporting to class. As mentioned in a previous memo, the first period class is an academic course. Being continuously late could have a negative impact on your child's academic performance. I strongly encourage you to get your scholar to school on time.

2018-2019 Master Schedule

Uniforms

Students should arrive to school dressed in their uniform. Students are permitted to wear a polo style white, yellow/gold, or black shirt with black/khaki bottoms. Joggers, leggings, jeggings, and jeans are not permitted. Students should NOT wear a black shirt with black pants. Jackets must be black, white, yellow/gold, or grey with minimum writing. If you are in need of assistance with getting your child uniforms or would like to make a donation, please contact Ms. Melissa Barnett at 706-548-7281.

After School/21st Century

Hilsman Middle School does not have an after-school program. However we will begin to host our  21st Century Program the first Tuesday following Labor Day. If you are interested in learning more about this program or would like to sign your child up, please contact Mrs. Maxine Dalton or Mrs. Audrey Hughes at 706-548-7281.

Transportation

Car riders will be dropped off and picked up at the front entrance of  Hilsman 2.0. Buses will enter the campus using Civitan Club Drive. During dismissal, car riders and walkers will be dismissed first followed by the bus riders. A map is attached to provide you with a visual of the route. During the first week of school, we will work with students to help them identify their means of transportation to and from school. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 706-548-7281.

School Supplies

A list of school supplies has been provided for your reference. Please read the attachment to see what supplies your child will need to help them be prepared for learning this year! If you have any questions or need assistance please contact the school.

Schedules

Students will be provided with their schedules during homeroom Tuesday. If they are unaware of who their homeroom teacher is we will provide grade level lists in the main areas of the hallways. We will also have adults present to assist students the first week of school. Requests for specific teachers will not be honored as all of our teachers are equipped to provide your child with a quality education.

Building Concerns

I have received several emails regarding the condition of Hilsman 2.0. Please know that our Plant Service Department is working around the clock to ensure that the building is ready to receive our students Tuesday. I ask that you continue to be patient as they are working to meet our demands.

Transitions

Attached is a letter to address the concerns related to back packs. It is my hope that it provides you with a more detailed explanation.

Students who desire to bring their own lunches will be permitted to leave their lunch box in the classroom of the teacher that will take them to lunch. Their items will be safe. Teachers classroom doors will be locked at all times restricting unauthorized access to their classrooms.
